A Dress for Kathleen. Remembering an Aunt through Stitching and Creative Writing | Heather Richardson | Antrim & Newtownabbey Branch

Monday, 14 April 2025 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm BST

Talk for NIFHS Antrim & Newtownabbey Branch, A Dress for Kathleen. Remembering an Aunt through Stitching and Creative Writing by Heather Richardson, Monday, 14 April 2025 @ 7 pm.
Hybrid event: on-site & on Zoom. Those wishing to attend on Zoom should e-mail the Branch Secretary at AntrimNewtownabbey@nifhs.org and they will be sent the link.

The dress Heather Richardson made for her aunt Kathleen, who dies just before she turned fifteen, tells Kathleen’s story both in form and words. The dress itself is made from linen woven in the mill where she worked. The dressmaking pattern is from 1946, the year she would have turned twenty-one.

Heather Richardson wanted her aunt Kathleen to be alert to the world around her – its smells and colours and tastes. She began to write fictional fragments, imagining Kathleen’s journey to and from work that summer of 1939, inventing her memories. She then stitched the words onto the dress.

Kathleen’s life was then presented as a book. In the process, Heather also tells the stories of Kathleen’s parents and their lives together in rural Northern Ireland in the first half of the 20th Century.
