A Virtual Tour of Killinchy and Ballygowan | Laura Spence | Killyleagh Branch
Monday, 7 February 2022 @ 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm GMT
Virtual Branch Meeting on Zoom
with Talk by Laura Spence about Killinchy and Ballygowan.
These two quiet villages have both played their part in local history. Killinchy is at the heart of the story of Presbyterianism with its dynamic 17th century minister, Rev John Livingston and successive ministers. Three ancient castles in the area allow us to consider the Normans, the Plantation, and smuggling which was rife in these parts many years ago – before we look at more modern history and the story of Daft Eddy. We travel to Ballygowan via Kilmood and Florida Manor, following the Blackwater River; and arrive in the ‘townland of the smiths’ to hear about the grand families of the past, the quarries, the impact of the railway, and the horrifying scandal of Olivet House.
