Family Journals – Lorna Doherty | Antrim & Newtownabbey Branch

Join us on Monday and be inspired as Lorna Doherty shares stories she uncovered while researching old family letters and diaries. Discover the journey of her Great-Uncle John from rural County Down. He was a farmer’s son, who, after making his way to Pennsylvania, followed the building of the railroad across America before settling in Washington and setting up his own business.
Another discovery involved her Great-Uncle William, a missionary in China. Find out about his experiences during the Nanking Incident of March 1927 and his subsequent rescue by American destroyer USS Hulbert.
Finally, learn about her husband’s Uncle John who wrote a first-hand account of his time in the Royal Navy aboard HMS Aurora during World War II.
Join us and be motivated to delve into your own family papers – you never know what you’ll find.
Lorna trained as a home economics teacher and taught in primary, secondary and specialist schools. She worked on the European Transition to Adult and Working Life Project before joining the Council for the Curriculum, Examinations and Assessment where she retired as Business Manager for over 80 staff. Since retirement, alongside many other interests, she has enjoyed researching both her own and her husband’s family trees.
