Irish Journal Room
The North of Ireland Family History Society (NIFHS) maintains sets of more than 50 Irish journals in its Research Centre. The full list of titles, with their shelfmarks, is on the Journals page, with details of each journal’s issues available in the Library List.
Journals
Most of these Journals are published by family history or local history societies, mainly from the North of Ireland, and provide a wealth of information to support one’s family history research.
Many of the journals have been indexed resulting in two Indexes as follows:
North Irish Roots
There is a complete run of the Society’s journal North Irish Roots shelved at IR 069; copies of single issues or individual articles or journal binders are available at our online Shop.
All back numbers of the journal, except for the most recent three years, are freely available to Members online at the JSTOR Ireland Collection website; indeed all the journals there are freely available to Members who have supplied an email address and have taken up JSTOR’s invitation to join at no cost.
Newsletters
A number of the Society’s Branches produce Newsletters and the Society emails E-Newsletters twice a year to Members. Copies of all these are shelved at IR 090.
Ordnance Survey Memoirs
The Ordnance Survey Memoirs, however, are different: this is not a journal but a set of 40 volumes plus a comprehensive index of names of people and places. These descriptions of Ulster parishes and their people were compiled between 1821 and 1840 when Ireland was being mapped by the Ordnance Survey. They provide a valuable source for the family historian.
Periodicals
As well as the Irish journals there are sets of several genealogical Periodicals in the Reception Area.
