Miscellaneous Research
The North of Ireland Family History Society (NIFHS) has well over a hundred books on a miscellany of topics that provide useful background for a family history. An understanding of matters such as the origin of Irish surnames, information regarding wills, old medical terms, the history of the Plantation, hiring fairs, the Penal Laws, workhouses, hedge schools or descriptions of major events such as the Big Wind of 1839 or the Great Frost of 1740-41 can all help you gain a better understanding of your ancestors’ lives and provide good background information to make your family history come to life. These books are for consultation in the Library and not for borrowing.
The books are shelved at IR 750 in the Randal Gill Library.
