Notes about Publications

Booklets

NIFHS publishes two series of useful A5 booklets called Researching Your Ancestors in the North of Ireland.  One series is of guides for beginners and others to understand and locate the main records of use to genealogists.  The other series is of county guides with details of a very wide range of sources to take your research further.

Journals

NIFHS began publishing North Irish Roots in 1984 and it is now produced twice a year, in spring and autumn. Each edition published is distributed to Members only.  After one year from the date of publication the editions are offered for sale through our Shop if stock is still available.

Maps

NIFHS recommends the use of these reprints of old maps showing Ulster towns and villages and countryside as they were about a century ago.  Alan Godfrey Maps are reprints of Old Ordnance Survey Maps. They are based on either 25″ (or 1:2,500) plans, reduced to 15″ to the mile, or “Inch to the Mile” maps. As all these maps predate the Second World War, they show the configuration of streets before bomb damage, after which many streets in Belfast were lost. Each map includes a history of the area, and some include extracts from contemporary directories. For a list of the maps see the guide with descriptions and cover images Alan Godfrey Maps (pdf) and for information about which maps relate to which county see the guide Alan Godfrey Maps by County (pdf).

Books & CDs

NIFHS publishes a range of books and CDs of gravestone transcriptions, newspaper BMD announcements and letters and out-of-print local history material.
