The dress Heather Richardson made for her aunt Kathleen, who dies just before she turned fifteen, tells Kathleen’s story both in form and words. The dress itself is made from linen woven in the mill where she worked. The dressmaking pattern is from 1946, the year she would have turned twenty-one. Heather Richardson wanted her aunt Kathleen to be alert to the world around her – its smells and colours and tastes. She began to write fictional fragments, imagining Kathleen’s journey to and from work that summer of 1939, inventing her memories. She then stitched the words onto the dress.
